Because of the uncertainty surrounding Thatcher Demko, Patrik Allvin had been snooping around the goaltender market for an insurance policy, and he eventually came to an agreement with his top candidate.
The team declared today that they and free agent Kevin Lankinen have reached an agreement. Even though the Canucks' initial contract offer was insufficient to seal the deal, the team persisted in looking into this possibility.
As confirmed by General Manager Patrik Allvin, Canucks have signed Kevin Lankinen to a 1-year deal valued at $875,000.
The Canucks have been actively searching for extra goaltending options recently, given the uncertain health status of Thatcher Demko and Arturs Silovs. As the 2024-25 season opener approaches, Silovs appears nearly prepared to start, but the situation with Demko is more precarious. The Vezina Trophy finalist has disclosed that he is managing a "rare and unique" injury, one that medical professionals have yet to determine a definite recovery timeline for.
The 29-year-old Lankinen played in 24 games for the Nashville Predators in 2023-24, going 11-6-0 overall with a 2.82 goals-against average, a.908 save percentage, and one shutout.
With 112 career regular season appearances, split between Chicago and Nashville, the 6'2", 190-pound goalie has a record of 45-43-12, a 3.07 goals-against average, a.905 save percentage, and three shutouts.
The Canucks host the Calgary Flames on October 9th to kick off the regular season.
