The Vancouver Canucks officially part ways with a two-time Stanley Cup champion
The Vancouver Canucks are officially letting go of two-time Stanley Cup champion Ian Cole as he enters free agency.
As the offseason ramps up, it seems unlikely that defenseman Ian Cole will be back with the Vancouver Canucks for another season. As per various reports, including Rick Dhaliwal of The Athletic:
«Looks like Cole is going to hit the free agent market on July 1st,» said Dhaliwal. «He signed that one year deal last year with the Canucks at $3 million. Now, the Canucks would need Cole at a much lower number than three. It doesn't look like the Canucks will be able to re-sign him after some contract talks I believe over the weekend. In the last week, the two sides could not find common ground but it looks like they did talk. The Canucks really liked this player. They wanted him back, but it looks like he's going to hit the free agent market after some contract talks that couldn't find common ground.»
Dhaliwal also noted that Cole faced many challenges during the season, such as playing through injuries sustained when he collided with Evander Kane in game two of the playoffs second round. Despite these setbacks, Cole's leadership qualities and experience were highly appreciated by the Canucks. He participated in a great number of playoff matches, more than any teammate and his words held significance within the locker room.
Cole, who hails from Michigan has played in more than 800 NHL games. Has achieved success by winning two Stanley Cup titles with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and 2017.
Despite the Canucks interest in retaining him, it appears that Cole will be looking into free agency opportunities this summer.
