Defenseman Derek Forbort has rejoined the Vancouver Canucks after being absent due to the tragic passing of his father, Keith Forbort, who sadly passed away on October 16 at the age of 62.
Postmedia's Ben Kuzma reveals that Keith Forbort passed away from colon cancer. According to an obituary published in the Duluth News Tribune, a celebration of life was held last Thursday.
On social media, Canucks supporters quickly expressed their sympathies to the Forbort family.
During his absence, Forbort, who has participated in 499 NHL games, had missed the previous four Canucks games. There are concerns about how the team will incorporate him into the current lineup given his return. Erik Brannstrom's arrival on the blue line, for instance, has significantly improved the third pairing due to Brannstrom's puck-moving abilities. With Brannstrom's ability to play on the right side, a future collaboration with the seasoned, steady-handed Forbort could be bright.
Derek Forbort's return to the ice is sure to be an unforgettable occasion. Forbort's return will be especially meaningful because the emotions of the past week are still raw, and reaching 500 NHL games is a big accomplishment for any player. After playing the Hurricanes, the Canucks will play the New Jersey Devils at home on Wednesday before traveling to play the San Jose Sharks on Saturday.
