Trade finalized between Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks
The Toronto Maple Leafs have seen the outcome of the Sam Lafferty trade come to fruition with their selection of a goaltender in the 2024 NHL draft.
The Leafs entered the 2024 draft with limited draft capital. They traded to acquire a pick at the end of the 1st round, choosing defenseman Ben Danford. Despite this, they made effective use of several later-round picks they possessed.
The Leafs selected goaltender Timofei Obvintsev in the 5th round, adding a goaltender with good size and NHL upside to their prospect pool.
Congratulations to Timofei Obvintsev on being selected 157th overall to the Toronto #LeafsForever Maple Leafs! #WeAreGoldStar!
This draft pick is notably the same one the Leafs acquired from the Vancouver Canucks last season in exchange for defenseman Sam Lafferty.
With the 5th-round pick acquired in this trade, the Toronto Maple Leafs selected goaltender Timofei Obvintsev officially finalizing the trade! #LeafsForever
Usually, 5th-round draft picks don't yield significant results. Only about 3-5% of players drafted in the 5th round are projected to reach the NHL. However, Obvintsev is seen by many scouts as having real NHL potential.
Timofei Obvintsev is great value for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Big 6-foot-4 goaltender that some scouts think could be a legitimate NHLer one day.
Still some seasoning on the positioning size but I've been told there's serious upside there. #NHLDraft
Teams often manage to secure standout goalkeepers late in the draft. Many of the NHL's top goalies today were drafted in later rounds. Take Igor Shesterkin, for instancepicked in the fourth round. Perhaps the Leafs have just found their future starting goalie in Obvintsev, if they're fortunate enough.
