Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving bolstered his defensive depth today by signing free-agent defenseman Dakota Mermis.

Mermis, a seasoned defenseman at 30 years old, lacks extensive NHL experience, though last season marked a significant milestone in his career. He played 47 games with the Wild, averaging just over 14 minutes per game, contributing 3 goals and 8 points.
It appears that 30-year-old free agent defenceman Dakota Mermis is joining the Leafs.

He's now listed on their active roster.

Mermis averaged 14 minutes in 47 games for the Wild last season.
Mermis reconnects with former teammates Max Domi and Anthony Stolarz, who were his junior hockey teammates at the London Knights of the OHL.
In the past 3 days the Leafs have signed three players from the 2012-2013 London Knights team: Max Domi, Anthony Stolarz, and now Dakota Mermis.

They apparently tried to sign former Knights team member Nikita Zadorov and are currently in talks with Mitch Marner.
The experienced defenseman is expected to spend a significant portion, if not all, of the upcoming season with the Toronto Marlies. Nonetheless, his performance this season demonstrated that he can effectively serve as a reliable bottom-pair defenseman when called upon.
