Auston Matthews, the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, will miss at least tonight's game due to an upper-body injury, the team announced today.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have bad news regarding injuries: new captain Auston Matthews will miss tonight's game and possibly more because of an upper body injury, according to reporter Chris Johnston.
With just 11 points from 13 games this season, Auston Matthews is off to a sluggish start. But after an incredibly slow first eight games, he has six points from his last five games. Despite their current record of 6, 5, and 1, the Toronto Maple Leafs should be performing significantly better, according to analytics.
Auston Matthews hasn't been completely healthy for a while; early in the season, he did miss a few practices due to an illness. The Leafs are hoping that this won't be a major problem in the long run. Fans are undoubtedly worried because Matthews hasn't started with the same ferocity to which they have grown accustomed in previous seasons. It's reasonable to wonder if the early season injury and this one are connected to something more serious.
Matthews contributed an assist in 22:12 minutes of ice time during Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild.
Max Domi will probably be the Maple Leafs' backup first-line center as John Tavares slows down. It's not ideal, but the team's defense is playing well, so if they can score a few goals, they should be alright.
With 575 career games played, the first overall pick in the 2016 draft has 373 goals and 660 points. With a $13.25 million cap hit in the first year of a four-year extension signed in 2023, he is the highest-paid player in the league this season.
The Maple Leafs are currently in third place in the Atlantic Division with a 6-5-2 record. With a 6-6-1 record, the Bruins are right behind them.
We'll see how the Toronto Maple Leafs appear without their captain when head coach Craig Berube makes his announcement later this morning.
