Oilers' Zach Hyman takes a sneaky jab at the Toronto Maple Leafs
Following his departure from the Maple Leafs and finding success in Edmonton, goal-scoring forward Zach Hyman has taken a significant swipe at Toronto.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are accustomed to criticism, especially in their intense media market. Now, one of their former players has subtly taken a jab at the team.
During the recent Hyman Family Foundation golf tournament, ex-Maple Leaf Zach Hyman discussed the reasons behind the Oilers' success, hinting at his former team's approach.
"It's a testament to the team that guys are willing to come back on team-friendly deals & take discounts to try & win," said Hyman of having a number of players return on team-friendly deals. "I think they see how special it is to play in Edmonton & it's now becoming more of a destination to play & that's really awesome to see."
During his tenure in Toronto, the team often faced criticism for overpaying players and losing crucial depth in free agency. With their recent aggressive efforts to re-sign players under Jeff Jackson, it's safe to say that the Oilers don't have this
issue.
He never directly names his former team, but given his significant improvement after leaving and the departure of Tyler Bertuzzi in free agency, it's reasonable to infer that he was referencing them.
This has been an ongoing issue for years in Toronto. With Brad Treliving facing critical decisions in upcoming free agency periods, unless they address this cultural challenge, the Maple Leafs may continue to lose key players year after year.
