Mitch Marner's next contract predicted by Leafs reporter and it's huge
Mitch Marner's upcoming cap hit is slightly higher, making it highly likely that he will remain a Toronto Maple Leaf moving forward.
Mitch Marner has established himself as an elite NHL player. Despite the off-season rumors and speculation about his future with the Maple Leafs, keeping the hometown star in Toronto has become a top priority for GM Brad Treliving.
Marner is set to enter the final year of his $10.9 million, six-year contract, making him a UFA on July 1st, 2025. A Leafs reporter has disclosed what his next contract in Toronto might entail.
according to The Leafs Nation's Jon Steitzer, Marner's cap hit is likely to fall in the same percentage range as the Elias Pettersson deal in Vancouver, which is 13.89% of the cap, or in the $12.2M range under the current $88M salary cap. As Steitzer also pointed out, that number would jump to $12.4M per season with next year's salary cap expected to reach $93M.
This contract would earn him $12.2 million annually, just about one million less than Maple Leafs star center Auston Matthews. While fans might find this concerning, the figures are justified by his recent production.
Mitch Marner's next projected contract:
$12.2M per year for 8 years = $97M total
With a trade looking unlikely now that the NHL draft has concluded, it appears Marner will remain a Leaf for the upcoming season and possibly secure an extension as well.
