Max Domi and the Toronto Maple Leafs: significant development revealed
Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving Appears Unsure About What to Do with Pending Free Agent Center Max Domi.
Leafs fans have been curious about the team's intentions regarding pending free agent forwards Tyler Bertuzzi and Max Domi. Brad Treliving signed both players to one-year deals last summer, leading to uncertainty about the team's future lineup.
Now, there's clarity on Tyler Bertuzzi's situation. NHL insider Chris Johnston reports that the 29-year-old will enter the open market on July 1st. Meanwhile, negotiations with Max Domi are reportedly ongoing for the Leafs.
"It sounds like Tyler Bertuzzi is likely to test the market at this point. Not totally clear on Max Domi, there are some mixed signals there. Domi is a pending UFA, naturally liked his time in Toronto, and has a long history with the organization. I don't know if the contract talks have gotten anywhere to compel him to stay. He's looking for some security right, I think it would take a 3-4 year deal minimum to compel him to sign before July 1st."
It appears that Domi is keen on remaining in Toronto. The center has openly expressed his affection for the organization, stating his desire to stay. Recent reports suggest he's even willing to accept a shorter contract with a reduced cap hit to facilitate this. Elliotte Friedman shared this insight on the Jeff Marek show. However, Brad Treliving's stance on re-signing Domi still appears uncertain.
Friedman on Max Domi (TJMS): "I know there were reports initially it would have to be 5x5, I don't think that's the case right now, I've heard the ask is in the 4x4 range, which doesn't strike me as incredibly unreasonable, again I think the Leafs are trying to be really careful"
This decision by the general manager appears perplexing, as re-signing Domi would seem straightforward to many. He demonstrated strong chemistry with the Leafs' top players and was among their top performers during the playoffs. Additionally, his display of character and grit addressed long-standing team deficiencies. Moreover, bringing him back would be a nostalgic story, given his father's history with the Leafs. One can only speculate what is preventing Treliving from offering a 4x4 extension.
