Jani Hakanpaa's injury update brings more troubling news for the Maple Leafs
After inking Jani Hakanpaa to a two-year deal, the Toronto Maple Leafs now face a worsening situation with the latest status update.
Day one of free agency was a huge plus for the Toronto Maple Leafs, as they signed several players to significant deals. However, questions surround each signing, particularly Jani Hakanpaa. Reports soon emerged that his playing days might be over, with Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun reporting:
What I was told about Hakanpaa was the belief that he would never play again in the NHL. I was told that his bone-on-bone knee was apparently shot. I was told from two sources that they didn't think that any team would sign him.
The same medical staff that approved bringing in John Klingberg is now facing criticism again. Simmons revealed that they gave the all-clear to Treliving and the front office, just a year after approving Klingberg, who ultimately spent most of the year on LTIR.
I asked the Leafs about the injury on Monday and was informed that he was cleared by the Toronto doctors.
As of now, the Maple Leafs have not provided an official update on Hakanpaa's situation. However, with each new report, the outlook worsens for a team desperately needing a veteran like him to step up and excel on the blue line.
