According to insider Darren Dreger, Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving intends to retain Mitch Marner.

Uncertainty surrounds Mitch Marner's future in Toronto as he approaches the final year of his $10,903,000 AAV contract, following a tumultuous season with the Maple Leafs.
During the playoffs, Marner faced considerable criticism for his performances, fueling numerous rumors.
Brad Treliving has indicated a thorough evaluation of all options to enhance his team for the 2024-25 season, but has not disclosed his plans regarding Marner.

Darren Dreger believes Toronto Maple Leafs' GM Brad Treliving wants to extend Mitch Marner

Dreger reports that Marner, who negotiated his deal in good faith, including a no-movement clause, intends to honor his contract with the Leafs. However, this decision could potentially strain the team, as Marner will become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2025.
He later expressed his view on the matter: he thinks Treliving prefers to extend Marner rather than trade him
This is what he said on TSN's First Up:
«I believe, based on people that I talk to again, as we're having this conversation Marner's preference is to play out his contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He's got one year remaining. Doesn't mean that he's going to walk out the door after next season. That doesn't mean it at all. Of course, there's a risk of that, because he'd be a pending unrestricted free agent. That's not the perfect position for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but Marner negotiated his deal in good faith, including the no-move clause.

And are we so sure that Toronto doesn't want to extend Mitch? I'm not. I think Treliving would rather extend than trade, but they're not having those discussions yet, either. It's still early. It's very premature across the board.»
Despite the playoff challenges this year, Marner has played eight seasons in Toronto with considerable success.
In the regular season, he amassed 639 points across 576 games. Moreover, he has demonstrated his ability to excel in playoff situations. Just last season, he tallied 11 points in six games, helping the Leafs defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round and end a long-standing drought, underscoring his capability to thrive in Toronto's high-pressure environment.
