Today, Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube shared some intriguing thoughts about Mitch Marner.

Marner has certainly been under scrutiny this summer. With just a year left on his contract at 27 years old, the Leafs face a challenging situation. Consequently, conflicting rumors about his future have dominated discussions throughout the offseason. However, head coach Craig Berube seems clear on the matter. The Stanley Cup winner had this to say about Marner:
Craig Berube on Mitch Marner: "He's a character guy. He's a great person. Obviously, a great player. I'm looking forward to coaching him."
As expected, Leafs fans reacted predictably to this comment. Many see it as a clear indication that Marner won't be traded. After all, why would Berube make such remarks if there weren't plans for him to coach the player?
This comment is not made if he was being traded...
People were wrong saying he's being traded.
However, many fans would expect such comments regardless of Marner's status with the team. What else is Berube supposed to say when reporters ask about Mitch Marner? Ignore the question? Deflect it?
What else is he supposed to say when asked about Mitch who's still a leaf?

«Yeah, he's a soft permitter player when it matters most. Have you guys seen his stat line in games 5-7? I hope he gets traded asap»
That being said, the current consensus is that Marner will be part of the Leafs roster on opening night next season. While circumstances could theoretically shift by the trade deadline, it's improbable that the team would move him so late in the season unless it's a dire situation. Above all, Leafs fans are surprised to see the core-four intact for another season.
It's not April 1st, right? I can't believe
we are doing this for another year 🙃
Make sure to stay updated this summer to see if the Maple Leafs make any more significant moves.
