The New Jersey Devils have traded goaltender Akira Schmid and winger Alexander Holtz to the Vegas Golden Knights for defenseman Paul Cotter and a 2025 3rd round pick.

New Jersey parts ways with Schmid, who became surplus following the acquisition of veteran goaltender Jakob Markstrom and current backup Nico Daws. Vegas, having earlier traded goalie Logan Thompson to Washington, now secures a replacement backup option for their goaltending duo.
Schmid, 24, posted a 5-9-1 record with a 3.15 GAA and .895 SV% in 19 games for the Devils this season.
Alexander Holtz, a former first-round pick of the New Jersey Devils, was highly regarded as a forward from Sweden when selected 7th overall in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.
Holtz struggled initially to adjust to North American-style hockey but managed to break into New Jersey's forward lineup this season, tallying 12 goals, 16 assists, and 28 points in 82 games.
Paul Cotter, acquired by New Jersey, is a physical, defensively-minded center. At 25 years old, Cotter posted 7 goals, 18 assists, and 25 points in 76 games for the Vegas Golden Knights during the 2023-24 season.
