Tyler Bertuzzi departed Toronto this summer to join the Chicago Blackhawks. It looks like the Leafs have identified and are nearing a deal for his replacement.
On paper, the Leafs seem to be a bit weaker up front without Bertuzzi, so they need to fill this gap. It looks like they may have found their solution in Nikolaj Ehlers of the Winnipeg Jets. Ehlers was selected just after William Nylander in the first round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
With 457 career points to his name, Ehlers stands out not only for his offensive contributions but also for his defensive prowess, boasting a career +/- rating of +92.
Nik Ehlers is a first-line-calibre talent and the Jets will miss him sorely when he's gone. If they manage to win a trade with him as the centrepiece I will be surprised.
Why might the Jets consider moving Ehlers? For one, he hasn't received as much ice time as he desires, and he's entering the final year of his contract, set to become a UFA next summer.
Disappointing to hear that Nick Robertson has requested a trade from the Leafs. His game definitely has potential: hard shot, some speed and skill. Obviously still a ways to go to round out his game, but I am hopeful
With Auston Matthews and William Nylander in their prime, the Leafs must do everything possible to capitalize on these years and not let them go to waste. Acquiring Ehlers would be a significant move in the right direction.
