Reports this afternoon confirm that the Tampa Bay Lightning are close to a major record-breaking sale for an NHL franchise.

Current owner Jeff Vinik is set to sell the team, with the expected price around $2 billion.
According to the latest updates from X, businessman Doug Ostrover of Blue Owl Capital is poised to acquire the Lightning. This sale, if finalized, will surpass the previous record set by the Ottawa Senators last year.
With the Tampa Bay Lightning's status as one of the premier NHL teams in recent years, their soaring value reflects not only their on-ice success but also the burgeoning popularity of hockey in Florida.
Despite the team's relatively short history of around 30 years, its performance has significantly boosted its market value.
The deal is still in the negotiation phase, but all signs point to a successful conclusion with Doug Ostrover becoming the new owner.
Vinik acquired the Lightning for approximately $170 million in 2010. Under his ownership, the franchise thrived both financially and on the ice, securing back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021.
This transaction eclipses the Ottawa Senators' $950 million sale to Michael Andlauer, setting a new record for the largest NHL sale ever.
