The Pittsburgh Penguins' 2024 Development Camp showcased Russian netminder Sergei Murashov, raising questions about his future in North America.
The Penguins concluded their Development Camp with Team 1, led by Owen Pickering, clinching the Michele Briere Trophy. Amidst the buzz, Sergei Murashov, a Russian goalie selected in the fourth round (118th overall) of the 2022 Entry Draft, drew significant attention.
Murashov's statistics from the previous season are impressive. In the MHL, he boasted a 24-4-2 record with a .930 SV% and 2.03 GAA, while in the senior KHL, he had a 3-1-2 record, .925 SV%, and 1.84 GAA. His 2022-23 season was even more outstanding with a .948 SV% and 1.53 GAA in 37 games.
"I just love playing. I think I have a good reading play, and just good character maybe. So I just want to play. Hockey is a game, and I think it is my best."
Observers at the camp lauded Murashov for his competitive spirit. Assistant General Manager Jason Spezza noted that while Murashov's plans for the upcoming season are unclear, his presence at the camp was a positive step. The Penguins hope to see him continue his development in North America this winter.
With Tristan Jarry and Alex Nedeljkovic signed for the 2024-25 season, the Penguins have strong NHL goalies. Additionally, non-NHL-roster goalies include Joel Blomqvist, Taylor Gauthier, Filip Larsson, Filip Lindberg, and Ludovic Waeber. Despite the depth chart, Murashov's performance at the development camp suggests he could soon play in the AHL and NHL.
Future prospects
Murashov has the potential to become the Penguins' next standout netminder, similar to Igor Shesterkin's impact in New York. This could eventually alter Jarry and Nedeljkovic's roles with the team. For now, all eyes are on Murashov's next move and how quickly he can adapt to the North American style of play.
