Aiming for a playoff spot, the Pittsburgh Penguins are seeking offensive reinforcements. This analysis examines top trade targets to enhance their offense.

Heading into the 2024-2025 season, the Penguins have roughly $4.5 million in cap space and a notable hole on the wing. Drew O'Connor played well with Sidney Crosby down the stretch, but the Penguins likely need another forward to complement the captain and bolster goal-scoring. In a July 1st press conference, following his Free Agency moves, GM Kyle Dubas spoke about his plans for the team:
«Those assets can come through the draft, younger free agents, via trade, or via waivers that can come in and support the core group here,» Dubas said

«What we're not going to do is get into the free agent quick fixes like some of the longer-range things we've seen today.»

Replacing Reilly Smith

While the Penguins have filled many positions, a winger is still needed to replace Reilly Smith. As Free Agency has passed, the premier forwards are already signed to other clubs, making the trade route more viable.

Nicholas Robertson: A potential breakout candidate

Nicholas Robertson, a young winger with the Toronto Maple Leafs, remains unsigned. At 23 years old, he could support the aging core and aid in the franchise's transition. Last season, Robertson scored 27 points in 56 games with just 11:22 minutes of ice time per game. The Penguins likely wouldn't need to move anyone to sign him, given their cap space and his limited NHL resume. His status as a frequent healthy scratch and disgruntled player may lower his trade cost.

Patrik Laine: A high-risk, high-reward option

Patrik Laine, 26, is known for his scoring prowess. Despite concerns about his defense, he would pair well with Sidney Crosby. Laine played only 18 games last season, scoring nine points before entering the Player Assistance Program. He had 56 points in 56 games in the 2021-2022 season and 52 points in 55 games in the 2022-2023 season. Acquiring Laine, with his $8.7 million cap hit, would likely require moving out someone like Ryan Graves or Tristan Jarry.

Nikolaj Ehlers: Speed and flexibility

Nikolaj Ehlers, 28, is known for his speed and flexibility. He scored 25 goals and 61 points last season, averaging 15:52 minutes of ice time. Ehlers is on an expiring $6 million contract, and acquiring him would also require moving out cap hits. He would likely be the most expensive addition in terms of trade value, costing a first-round pick and a younger player.
Choosing the right trade target is challenging. Nikolaj Ehlers would significantly boost the offense but comes with a high cost. Patrik Laine offers strong scoring potential but has availability concerns and a hefty cap hit. Nicholas Robertson, being young, cost-effective, and full of potential, appears to be the best fit. While negotiating with the Maple Leafs might be difficult, a successful deal could make Robertson a long-term asset for the Penguins.
Ultimately, the decision will depend on the team's immediate needs versus their long-term goals. Each target has its pros and cons. With some cap space left and one key position to fill, GM Kyle Dubas is in a good position to add a forward who can push the Penguins closer to contention.
