The Penguins made a somewhat unusual and unexpected move today, announcing that Tristan Jarry would be placed on waivers.
Perhaps it is not so surprising that he would be placed on waivers given how he has performed this season, but to announce it ahead of time is a bit strange.
Now we know what will be coming next for Jarry and the Penguins.
General manager Kyle Dubas confirmed that goalie prospect Joel Blomqvist will be called up for his second stint with the team this season while Jarry, should he clear waivers, will be demoted to the AHL once again.
This is already the second time Jarry has been sent down to the AHL this season and a close look at his numbers explains why.
The 29-year-old has made 20 starts for the Penguins this year, posting an 8-7-4 record, an .886 save percentage, and a 3.32 goals-against-average.
Joel Blomqvist on the other hand has performed better overall, but the team has not played as well in front of him, leading to mixed results in his numbers.
In 8 starts this season he has a 3-5 record, a 3.60 goals-against-average, and a .904 save percentage.
He has a .912 save percentage and a 2.93 GAA in 12 starts with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL this season, earning him the callup.
The Penguins have recovered somewhat from their horrific start to the season, putting them within striking distance of a playoff spot.
However, they are just 2-5-3 over their last ten games and Jarry has been a huge part of that struggle.
He has not recorded a win personally since before Christmas.
Hopefully, he will be able to regain his form in the AHL. If not, his days with the Penguins could be coming to an end.
