The Pittsburgh Penguins suffered a massive loss last time out, and now it's sparked plenty of trade speculation after their poor start to the season.

The Pittsburgh Penguins entered 2024/25 looking to break their two-year absence from the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but through 17 games thus far, they've looked nothing like a competent team. With a 6-9-2 record, things aren't looking great, and their ninth regulation loss of the year on Monday didn't help, as the team allowed six first period goals as they ultimately fell 7-1 at home to the Dallas Stars.
This has led many to call for the team to clear the team out and make some big moves, and reportedly, this is what one source close to the team had to say about the situation when asked who could be available in Pittsburgh.
"everyone is available, except 87."
That comes directly from General Manager Kyle Dubas, meaning that Erik Karlsson, Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin among others are available, as their poor start could force his hand into helping this team into a new, rebuilding era.
Given what has been said all summer long, this is very consistent from Dubas, who signed Sidney Crosby to a two-year, $8.7 million AAV extension, and with that, seemingly locked in the captain for the rest of his career.
However, with players like Marcus Pettersson, Bryan Rust, Rickard Rackell, Ryan Graves and others that all have some type of trade value around the league, it makes sense that this latest loss could force Dubas' hand.
It's been well assumed by many fans that this team would need to strip everything back and start over around Crosby given their overall lack of talent, and now it continues to make more and more sense, so we will wait to see how long it takes Dubas to make that push.
Unfortunately for Dubas, Malkin, Rust, Karlsson and Letang all carry no-trade clauses in their contracts, so while it's not going to be easy, it's certainly necessary, so expect to see some major developments on this front in the coming weeks.
