Latest update on Sidney Crosby's future in Pittsburgh from hockey insider
Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, with one year left on his contract, is at the center of speculation about his future.
As the NHL superstar approaches free agency in the summer of 2025, fans are eagerly awaiting news of a potential extension.
Crosby, who is nearing the end of his 12-year, $104.4 million contract (with an average annual value of $8.7 million), is part of an aging trio along with Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang. Despite their ageeach player is over 35Crosby's performance remains stellar. He scored 42 goals and added 52 assists in the 2023-24 season, playing all 82 regular-season games.
According to Penguins Insider Rob Rossi of The Athletic, there is no immediate concern about Crosby's contract status. Rossi reveals that both Crosby and Penguins management are content with the current state of negotiations, allowing for a "downtime" during the summer.
Rossi stated,
"I made a few calls to follow up, and the only real news perhaps another subjective term is that all parties (Crosby and his agent, Pat Brisson, and Penguins president of hockey operations/general manager Kyle Dubas) were comfortable enough with where the contract negotiations stood that everybody felt comfortable going about summer plans such as taking holidays and enjoying a bit of downtime," Rossi explained.
"Nobody from the Penguins' hockey side is worried about Crosby eventually putting ink to paper. This is not to suggest some folks who deal with season-ticket holders/corporate partners aren't sweating until he does."
Rossi further noted that while there might be some anxiety among those dealing with season-ticket holders and corporate partners, there is no worry from the Penguins' hockey operations side about Crosby eventually signing a new deal.
As Crosby continues to defy the expectations of aging athletes, his legacy as one of the greatest players in both Penguins and NHL history is firmly intact. The anticipation around his next contract and future with the team only adds to the excitement surrounding his storied career.
