NHL insiders from The Athletic have revealed that the Rangers could look to flip out newly acquired Will Borgen, and two teams are at the forefront.

The New York Rangers will likely continue to retool their roster if their season keeps trending downward, as they are 4-13-0 in their last 17 games going into the weekend following the holiday break.

They've already made some big moves in trading away their captain, Jacob Trouba, and former second-overall draft pick Kaapo Kakko. In return for Kaapo Kakko, the Seattle Kraken sent back rugged defenseman Will Borgen.

However, Will Borgen, 28, will be an unrestricted free agent after the season, and insiders Pierre LeBrun and Chris Johnston of 'The Athletic' theorize he could be moved again by the deadline if the Rangers can't get things straightened out at Madison Square Garden.

Two teams have cropped up as potential destinations for the 6'3" right-shot defenseman. In the eyes of Pierre LeBrun, the Panthers fit the bill because they are in the market for a physical, right-shot rental defenseman.

Borgen's $2.7 million cap hit and likely very manageable trade cost make him very attractive to acquire.

Next up are the Vancouver Canucks, another strong contender in light of the gaping hole on their right side while Filip Hronek was out for an extended period.

"The stay-at-home defender is a good skater who should be able to step into a second pairing on a team (like Vancouver) and brings the kind of size teams view as an added plus come playoff time. Borgen will have plenty of suitors ahead of the deadline, but there may not be anyone more motivated to pursue him than Vancouver," writes Johnston.

Borgen's ability to kill penalties only adds further value for the Canucks, as they are desperately looking for help on the blue line.

So far, Borgen has averaged 17:35 in ice time through his three games with the Rangers and has provided 10 hits. What the Rangers decide to do with him, whether keeping him or trading him away for more assets, is yet to be determined.
