It's not a good time to be Cayden Primeau of the Montreal Canadiens.
The Habs made a surprise move on Friday recalling goaltender Jakub Dobes from the AHL in a move that left Cayden Primeau's future with the Montreal Canadiens in jeopardy as he has to go on waivers in order to be sent to the minors.
It turns out that is exactly the plan according to Sportsnet's Eric Engels. Primeau is expected to hit waivers on Saturday.
If Primeau isn't picked up by another team, he'll be sent to the minors in a clear message from the Montreal Canadiens that his play has simply not been good enough.
If the Canadiens' message isn't resonating with Primeau, head coach Martin St. Louis and GM Kent Hughes are wasting no time in having Jakub Dobes make his NHL debut. He gets the start on Saturday against the Florida Panthers.
The Canadiens are in the midst of a rebuild and looking for steady goaltending from a young netminder to play behind Sam Montembeault, who has been given the green light as the team's number one for now.
Primeau, who many thought would develop into a reliable NHL goalie, has not been good this season, sporting a record of 3-2-1 in 11 games, with a save percentage of 0.836, and a goals against average of 4.70.
If Primeau finds himself with the Laval Rocket of the AHL, it will be a tough road getting back to the NHL.
