While the Edmonton Oilers are rolling after a slow start to the 2024/25 season, they've got some major improvements to make if they want to make it back to the Stanley Cup Finals this season.
The biggest hole on this roster has been on their blue line, with very little punch provided beyond the top pairing of Mattias Ekholm and Evan Bouchard, and now they need to address it before prices rise at the trade deadline.
Now, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period has linked them to three intriguing players: David Savard of the Montreal Canadiens, Brian Dumoulin of the Anaheim Ducks and Ivan Provorov of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Currently, the Oilers rely on Brett Kulak, Ty Emberson and Troy Stecher to fill the bottom three spots in their lineup, and while they've done well thus far, in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, there's definitely a major jump in competition.
In Dumoulin, Provorov or Savard, the Oilers would be getting immense experience to play alongside Darnell Nurse, and with the team already ranking in the top half of the league in GAA this season, a small upgrade may be all that's needed.
Unfortunately for Edmonton, they don't have the major assets needed to land a true star on the blue line, with the three names suggested by Pagnotta all being very affordable, experienced options that could enhance their blue line in a huge way.
With the trade deadline coming up early in March, the Oilers will need to be very proactive with teams like Dallas, Colorado and Vancouver all expected to make huge upgrades ahead of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, with Edmonton's blue line issues needing to be fixed in a huge way before that point.
