Montreal Canadiens veteran defenseman David Savard is on the trade block, and Stanley Cup contenders who need a reliable blueliner like the Edmonton Oilers, could be a suitor for his services.
According to Dave Pagnotta, the rebuilding Montreal Canadiens might not be looking to move him right now, but he hinted that as they'll likely listen to offers to maximize their return as we approach March's deadline. That's where the Oilers could come into play.
"I think, I think yes. Short answer on the first part is yes. I think Ken Hughes and the Canadiens would certainly be willing to listen now on David Savard. I think they might want to push things off to try to maximize that return later on in the season. And I think you're going to see potentially Savard having that opportunity for the Canadiens anyway, having the opportunity to move him a little bit earlier, maybe a month to six weeks ahead of the deadline at the beginning of March, and he's certainly going to be a prime target."- Dave Pagnotta
GM Kent Hughes will be patient, so teams like the Oilers could decide to jump in early if they believe Savard is their answer to the back end.
Looking at the resume, he's not flashy, but is the type of player Edmonton could use. The 34 year-old has size and is a Stanley Cup champion, having helped the Tampa By Lightning reach the top of the mountain for a second consecutive year in 2021. The rental is also cheap at $3.5 million AAV.
A first round pick would be too much, but with the Canadiens taking themselves out of the playoff hunt , a deal could happen if Oilers GM Stan Bowman wants.
The Oilers have a win-now window, and adding Savard might be the move to solidify themselves for another deep run. It's worth keeping an eye on as the season unfolds.
