While every NHL season is thrilling, captain of the Edmonton Oilers Connor McDavid says that this one felt special. A few months ago, number 97 was just one goal away from realizing his long-awaited dream of winning the Stanley Cup.
And in a show of pure leadership, McDavid circled the ice by himself as the rest of his teammates headed for the dressing room as the final buzzer in Game 7 sounded, as the Florida Panthers' celebrated their championship victory.
However, before getting married, McDavid chose to have a more tranquil getaway in the Bahamas instead of organizing a huge bachelor party in Europe because he was so devastated. He had lost so much, he was just not in the mood to party. The pain of being so close to winning, though, endures even in those instances. McDavid said that the anguish of losing in the Stanley Cup Final will always be felt.
McDavid exudes a sense of resolve on the ice to get over the heartache he experienced last summer. He's said it himself: any season that concludes without him raising the Stanley Cup represents yet another chance lost. Getting his name inscribed on hockey's most coveted award is the only way McDavid can really move past the setback of the previous season.
With newfound optimism and anticipation, the team and its supporters begin the new campaign. Finally, there's a sense that this could be the year they win it all thanks to Connor McDavid's redirected leadership energies.
