This season has not gone the way that anyone in Detroit would have expected, with the team hoping to end their eight-year Stanley Cup Playoff drought in 2024/25.
Unfortunately, their struggles have continued, and unless they find a major upgrade, that drought will roll on for another season, and now we may know exactly with which team they will be looking to make a deal.
According to the NHL's top Insider Elliotte Friedman, the team discussed a deal with the Buffalo Sabres before the NHL roster freeze a week ago, and now those discussions could take place again moving forward.
With the likes of Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider all having fantastic seasons in Detroit, it's clear that the core they have in place is a great one, but without the depth around them, they just aren't good enough to be competitive in the Atlantic Division.
These struggles are what forced them to make a move behind the bench, with the team hiring Todd McClellan over the holiday break after moving on from Derek Lalonde, with plenty of fans excited about the move.
On top of that, Friedman notes that the New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues are both teams to look for, as the Red Wings have been scouting their opponents heavily in recent times as they look for a roster upgrade.
However, Detroit's roster is simply not good enough to compete right now, so unless they're willing to move some of their top prospects to make major additions to the team, it's safe to say that things won't be changing anytime soon as they look to finally fulfil the Yzerplan and get back into the post-season.
