As the NHL offseason nears its end, attention shifts to deals from earlier in the summer, with the Necas trade rumors drawing particular interest.
Earlier this offseason, speculation was rife that Martin Necas would be traded by the Hurricanes. However, in late July, Necas surprised many by signing a two-year contract extension with Carolina. This unexpected move left fans and analysts alike questioning the future of these trade discussions.
In his latest 32 Thoughts column, Friedman provided further insight into the trade talks involving Necas. He confirmed that before signing his extension, multiple teams were keenly interested in acquiring the talented forward. Notably, the Columbus Blue Jackets and Winnipeg Jets were at the forefront of these discussions.
The Blue Jackets and Jets, both teams striving to elevate their status, saw Necas as a crucial addition. For the Blue Jackets, the acquisition would bolster their young core and enhance their playoff chances. Meanwhile, the Jets, with their eyes set on the Stanley Cup Finals, viewed Necas as a key piece to achieving their ultimate goal.
Despite serious negotiations, neither the Blue Jackets nor the Jets were able to finalize a deal. As a result, Martin Necas remains with the Hurricanes for now. Given the short duration of his new contract, it's possible that trade rumors could resurface sooner rather than later.
