The Philadelphia Flyers and Calgary Flames played their home opener last night, and it was undoubtedly an emotional one.

The Flames released a great tribute video for the late Johnny Gaudreau before the puck dropped. He and his brother Matthew were killed in late August when they were hit by a car while riding their bikes.
It should come as no surprise that the fan response to the tribute video was even better than the video itself. For several minutes, everyone in the Saddledome erupted in "Johnny" chants and applauded.
A fan base doesn't usually adore an entire family, but the Gaudreaus family was one of those rare exceptions. They summoned the courage, in true Flames fashion, to address the team before tonight's game.
«Hi Calgary, on behalf of the entire Gaudreau family, we want to express our deepest gratitude to our Calgary family,» said Jane Gaudreau, Johnny and Matthew's mom. «Your thoughts, your prayers, your cards, your gifts and your visits have meant the world to us. The love and support you have shown for John, Matty, and our entire family has helped us through the hardest time of our lives.

«Calgary and the Flames organization have been a special part of our lives for 13 incredible years. We've made so many friends that become family to us.»
As the team got ready to play the Philadelphia Flyers, Guy Gaudreau, sporting a red Flames hoodie, wished them luck. This made the fans feel a little better about themselves despite the terrible tragedy and emotions.
For the first eight seasons of his career, Johnny was a beloved player by Flames supporters in Calgary and now holds a special place in their hearts.
The hockey community as a whole, as well as Flames supporters, have undoubtedly come together and done everything in their power to honor Johnny and Matthew. The hockey community will always remember the two exceptional young men.
