Riley Sheahan, a longtime forward for the Detroit Red Wings, has announced his retirement from the NHL.

Sheahan was selected in the first round of the 2010 NHL Draft and signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings. He played in his first NHL game for Detroit against the Chicago Blackhawks on April 7, 2012.

In exchange for Scott Wilson and a third-round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, Sheahan was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins on October 21, 2017, along with a fifth-round pick. After 81 games, he finished the 2017-18 season with 32 points. Sheahan inked a one-year deal with the Penguins on June 27, 2018.
Sheahan played for six NHL teams over the course of a 12-year career, including the Florida Panthers, Edmonton Oilers, Buffalo Sabres and the Seattle Kraken. Riley Sheahan appeared in 637 NHL games and 120 AHL games. Sheahan hasn't participated in a game since the 2022-2023 season, when he left the Buffalo Sabres and Rochester Americans in favor of playing 12 games with EHC Biel-Bienne in the top league in Switzerland.
Sheahan experienced injury struggles in his later career, going on injured reserve in 2019 and again in 2021 and 2022. Due to an unidentified injury, Sheahan was placed on the final injured reserve (IR) on October 7, 2022, and would only play in eight more games in the North American professional leagues before his career ended.
Having scored 61 points in the AHL and 194 in the NHL, he will now hang up his skates. Sheahan informed Potrecz that he currently assists the Niagara North Stars with their Sunday night development skates. He also mentioned that he hasn't ruled out the possibility of expanding his coaching position in the future, but that his wife and two small children will always come first.
We wish Riley Sheahan a happy retirement.
