After the Dallas Stars lost to the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference Final of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Calgary Flames executed another trade. Interestingly it appears that their rivals, the Oilers played a role in limiting Calgary's gains on two occasions.
This year in March, Chris Tanev was traded from the Calgary Flames to the Dallas Stars as part of a three team deal that also involved the New Jersey Devils. In return for Tanev, the Flames received a prospect and draft picks, including a second round pick in 2024 and a conditional third round pick in 2026.
A fan noted that Edmonton's victory over Vancouver in the second round dashed Calgary's hopes again. Calgary had traded Elias Lindholm to Vancouver, which included a fourth round pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. It could have been a third-rounder if Lindholm and the Canucks had advanced to the conference finals. But Edmonton put an end to that.
It's worth mentioning that Matthew Tkachuk and Sam Bennett played huge roles in helping the Florida Panthers reach the Stanley Cup Final against the Edmonton Oilers, both players having been traded to Florida by Calgary.
