Since midnight, the NHL holiday roster freeze has been active, meaning that teams can't make moves until December 28th.
However, that doesn't mean general managers won't work behind the scenes to make deals and wait until the end of the freeze to announce them.
According to a new source, that seems to be Barry Trotz's case.
The Nashville Predators parted ways with many players this season, such as Dante Fabbro, Scott Wedgewood, and Philip Tomasino. After he added Alexander Carrier to that list earlier this week by trading him to the Montreal Canadiens, Trotz now has around $4 million in cap space and is looking to add someone to his lineup.
The Hockey News reporter Emma Lingan revealed on X that sources stated that Trotz will be looking to make a move in January, after the trade freeze:
Another source confirmed that the team made cap space for something. Confirming they plan on making a move:
We know the Preds want to be in the playoff mix this season. If they want to be competing against the Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, and Utah Hockey Club for a playoff spot until the end of the season, they need to do something soon.
Currently, in the eighth spot in the Central Division, Nashville is 10 points away from Utah at the fifth rank.
They still have time to turn things around, and Trotz seems determined to make it happen:
If it doesn't work, Nashville could end up getting a high pick in the 2025 NHL draft, which could be a great consolation prize.
