This season, the Anaheim Ducks have once again struggled, posting a 4-6-2 record through their first 12 games, but given the state of their rebuilding organization, this was to be expected. Despite this, the play of young stars like Leo Carlsson, Troy Terry and Mason MacTavish has given them plenty of hope for the future, but with Trevor Zegras struggling, it's becoming clear that the team could be looking to move on from him.
There have been links to Montreal for quite some time, but now as speculation heats up, there have been many other teams potentially interested in the talented 23-year old. One of those new teams is the Calgary Flames, with recent trade proposals seeing Zegras get a brand new start in a Canadian market while Anaheim get another draft pick, a talented young forward and a defensive prospect.
There was plenty of pushback on the return however, as the idea of trading Zegras while his trade value is at an all-time low may not be the best move from an organizational perspective. A few years ago, Zegras graced the cover of the NHL video game and was touted as the hottest new star in the NHL, but from that point he's struggled to find consistent production, tallying just 1 goal and 2 assists thus far in 12 games in 2024/25.
On top of that, Zegras just doesn't fit the mold of GM Pat Verbeek like Terry, MacTavish and Carlsson do, and while the package would likely need an upgrade from the Flames perspective, this is a move that makes sense for both parties, so keep a close eye on the situation.
