The Edmonton Oilers have made a notable move by acquiring defenceman Ty Emberson from the San Jose Sharks.

In exchange, the Oilers are sending defenceman Cody Ceci and a third-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft to San Jose. This trade marks a significant change for both teams as they prepare for the upcoming season.
«Cody is a solid, competitive veteran defenseman who brings a well-rounded skill set to our group," said Mike Grier. "He's a strong penalty killer who can also contribute offensively and he brings extensive playoff experience. We're excited to have him join our organization.»

Cody Ceci, 30, contributed 25 points (five goals, 20 assists) and 14 penalty minutes over 79 games with the Edmonton Oilers last season. He had a +12 rating, ranking third among Oilers defensemen, and led in short-handed ice time (205:08).
Ceci's 20:01 average ice time per game was fourth among team blueliners, and he was third in blocked shots (106) and sixth in hits (91). The 2023-24 season marked his second with 20+ assists, and his 25 points were the fourth-highest of his career. Additionally, he tallied five points (two goals, three assists) in 24 playoff games with Edmonton.
Over 786 NHL games with Ottawa, Toronto, Pittsburgh, and Edmonton, Ceci has accumulated 211 points (48 goals, 163 assists) and 170 penalty minutes.

Ty Emberson's potential impact on the Oilers

Ty Emberson, a 24-year-old defenceman, joins the Edmonton Oilers following a season with the San Jose Sharks where he played 30 games. In his rookie NHL season, Emberson scored one goal and added nine assists, accumulating 10 points while averaging 18:33 of ice time per game.
Known for his right-shot blueline presence, Emberson was initially drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in the third round of the 2018 NHL Draft (73rd overall).
Before his NHL debut, Emberson spent three seasons in the AHL, amassing 132 games with the Tucson Roadrunners and Hartford Wolf Pack.
During his time in the minors, he registered 12 goals and 27 assists for a total of 39 points. His experience in both leagues will likely contribute positively to the Oilers' defensive lineup.
The Oilers' acquisition of Emberson could bring a fresh dynamic to their blue line, potentially enhancing their defensive depth and providing additional options for their power play and penalty kill units.
This trade also signals a strategic move by the Oilers as they look to build a more robust team for the next season.
