NHL insider links Vancouver Canucks as the perfect landing spot for Marcus Pettersson
In recent NHL trade rumors, the Vancouver Canucks are being highlighted as a potential destination for Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson.
The Pittsburgh Penguins' most talked-about topic in recent weeks, has been the extension talks with captain Sidney Crosby. Yet, another key player up for an extension is defenseman Marcus Pettersson, who has remained a reliable force on the blue line since joining the team in 2018.
Insider and writer for The Athletic NHL, Harman Dayal has pointed out Pettersson's fit with the Canucks, particularly noting his synergy with top players like Erik Karlsson.
Harman Dayal shared insights on Marcus Pettersson's potential impact during his appearance on the "CanucksConvo Podcast" with David Quadrelli:
"He's the model sort of partner for, like, for, no, no, it's probably a first Marcus Patterson is a really good man. Like he, he's the model sort of partner like for Erik Karlsson; I don't know if you've heard Karlsson talk about Marcus Patterson."
Dayal continued:
"Karlsson just raves and raves about Petters, like he's Pittsburgh's only top-four defender that can actually defend really well."
Karlsson's admiration for Pettersson underscores the latter's defensive capabilities, with Dayal drawing parallels between Pettersson and Shea Theodore. He suggested that acquiring Pettersson would be costly, possibly exceeding the value of a second-round pick:
"So is he in this conversation that Shea Theodore is in as well, where if a team's training for him, they're just extending him, like he may be a pure rental, just kind of, kind of depends, but it's like, you're not going to get him for a second-round pick, or like, a second plus something else, it's going to be expensive."
Dayal shared his high regard for Pettersson's skills, emphasizing his ability to move the puck effectively while also being a solid defender. This versatility could be particularly beneficial for the Vancouver Canucks, especially in high-stakes playoff scenarios:
"That's where, like, I love Petterson as a player, and stylistically, it would check both boxes in that. Okay, he could move the puck, but also, like, he's somebody that Rick talk could hypothetically turn to go out and defend against Conor McDavid in the playoffs."
Marcus Pettersson, who is in the final year of his five-year, $20.125 million contract, will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2024-25 season.
His potential move to the Vancouver Canucks could add a significant boost to their defensive lineup.
