The hockey world mourns the heartbreaking loss of a 31-year-old defenseman
The Eastern Ontario Super Hockey League (EOSHL) announced today the tragic passing of Deseronto Bulldogs defenseman Troy Wylie at the age of 31.
Wylie, who recently joined the senior hockey ranks, was involved in a motorcycle accident and passed away on the morning of September 6, 2024, leaving behind a legacy cherished by teammates and friends alike.
The Napanee Raiders made a public statement following the news of Wylie's passing.
"Our Organization is devastated this morning by the news of the tragic passing of Troy Wylie at the age of 31. Troy played for the Raiders from 2011-12 to 2014-15 and served as an alternate captain many of those years. The Kingston native could capably play forward - where he was seldom lost a battle along the boards - and defense, where he could be counted on for making simple, smart zone exits.
He was incredibly dedicated through goods times and bad. He was remembered by those who played with him and coached him as a great teammate, a hard worker, and a kind, respectful person away from the rink who loved his family and friends. We extend our condolences to Troy's fiance Chelsea, his parents Pete and Tammy, their family, and the many whose lives were better for having known him."
Troy Wylie began his senior hockey career in the 2023-2024 season, playing with the Deseronto Bulldogs after spending time with the Napanee Raiders during the 2014-2015 season, where he served as an alternate captain. His leadership and dedication to the sport earned him respect both on and off the ice.
Although Wylie only played 10 games last season with the Bulldogs, his impact on the team and the EOSHL was immense. The league, sanctioned by the Ontario Hockey Association and Hockey Canada, mourns the loss of a beloved player and teammate. Deseronto Bulldogs, along with Wylie's colleagues, remember him as "the epitome of a teammate" and a person of high character.
Troy Wylie, born in Kingston, Ontario, proudly wore the number 27 jersey for the Deseronto Bulldogs. He was known for his dedication and the leadership qualities he brought to the ice. His passing leaves a void in the lives of those who knew him, and the cause of his death remains unconfirmed at this time.
The hockey community, particularly those connected to the Eastern Ontario Super Hockey League, has rallied in support of Wylie's family during this difficult time.
"Our heartfelt condolences go out to Troy's family and friends as they navigate this challenging moment," the league stated in their official announcement.
The passing of a player so young-at just 31 years old-has deeply affected the EOSHL, and it serves as a reminder of the tight-knit bond within the hockey community. Our deepest condolences go out to Troy Wylie's family, friends and loved ones.
