When Casper Gillberg struck the referee and knocked him into the boards, breaking his arm, he was given a lengthy suspension. Now the police are charging him.

The world of hockey was rocked by a startling incident that happened in Swedish hockey in November 2023. The official suffered a broken arm as a result of Casper Gillberg slamming him into the boards during a game. There is currently a move to take the incident to court in its aftermath. The police have been called in after the authorities decided to file criminal charges.

As a result, Gillberg was placed on indefinite leave for the remainder of 2023 and 2024. He was recently granted an extension to his suspension, which will now last until the end of May 2025.

SUSPENSION ⛔️

Casper Gillberg is suspended until December 31, 2024.

In the assessment, the disciplinary board also takes into account that the player is a repeat offender because he served a six-week suspension during last year's season.

According to Expressen.se, Gillberg has been accused of assault, and the 22-year-old athlete could face fines of up to $3,000 USD, according to the prosecution. The player maintains his not guilty plea, citing self-defense.

"We get down to the corner and I have in my head that I'm going to tackle this player and win the puck so we can attack instead. But instead he turns around, and as I continue down towards the crease I see the referee approaching and out of pure instinct or wanting to protect myself, I put my hands up and push off in pure self-defense or instinct."

The date of his trial is unknown. After playing for the NAHL's Corpus Christi IceRays in North America during the 2021-22 season, Casper Gillberg returned to his native Sweden to begin his career with his local club.
