The New Jersey Devils have not signed former Boston Bruins forward Milan Lucic to a professional tryout contract (PTO), stirring up mixed reactions among fans.

This move was first reported by The Hockey Writer founder James Courville, who credited Bob Stauffer, a Sportsnet reporter, for breaking the news. The unexpected rumor signing has generated a buzz online.
UPDATE:
From the #NJDevils on Milan Lucic PTO rumor:

"Categorically untrue. His situation lies with the league. We haven't and couldn't sign him to a PTO. Apparently, Stauffer corrected t on his hit later n the day."

As you were, folks.

Reactions to Lucic's rumor signing

One fan humorously commented that he expected Lucic to be an Oilers signee, especially with the team's recent hiring of Stan Bowman as their general manager. Bowman's past involvement in the coverup of the Kyle Beach assault case while working with the Chicago Blackhawks has already created a stir, and adding Lucic to the roster might have been another controversial move for the Oilers.
Devils fans, however, are not as amused. Signing Lucic brings with it the burden of bad press due to a domestic violence incident that occurred last season. On top of this, fans question whether Lucic's role on the team is even necessary, as the Devils have young talent ready to step up. Many believe his spot could be filled by a prospect, allowing the team to continue fostering its youthful core.
At 36 years old, Lucic's recent numbers don't inspire much confidence. Last season, he appeared in just four games and managed only two points. The previous year, while playing for the Calgary Flames, he recorded 7 goals and 19 points over 77 games, finishing with a minus-13 rating and 43 penalty minutes. His once-feared physical play has worn down over the years, and it remains to be seen whether he can contribute meaningfully to a Devils team that is looking to build on its young talent.

Is Lucic's comeback worth it?

Lucic's ability to stage a comeback at this point in his career will likely require a significant effort. His physical style of play has undoubtedly taken a toll on his body, and even if he manages to bring back some of his past form, the question remains: Is it worth the gamble for any team to sign him?
The hockey world will be watching closely to see whether Milan Lucic will make a comeback to the NHL.
