As the 2024-25 NHL regular season draws near, speculation is growing about the future of Pittsburgh Penguins' captain, Sidney Crosby.

Crosby's impact on the Penguins' franchise over the past 19 years has been monumental. He remains one of the league's top players despite Connor McDavid now being regarded as the face of the NHL. The Penguins captain enters his 20th season as a combination of skill, intelligence, and leadership, making it hard to imagine Pittsburgh would consider moving him.
TSN analyst Travis Yost has stirred up potential debate in Pittsburgh and Montreal with his latest remarks involving Sidney Crosby and Kent Hughes.
"Travis Yost (TSN) has had some fun creating scenarios that would send Crosby elsewhere. And among the teams he mentioned in his article is the Canadiens... Because in Yost's eyes, no other team would benefit more from a Sidney Crosby than the Canadiens, even if he arrived as a rental player."

Most analysts believe that the chances of Crosby being traded are slim, particularly because he remains the heart of the Penguins, even with his contract nearing expiration. Some insiders, such as Josh Yohe of The Athletic, argue that it's almost impossible Pittsburgh would move their star unless the team falls out of playoff contention early in the season.
Pittsburgh's cap flexibility makes a Crosby trade possible, as they can retain salary to boost the return. Teams like the Stars, Avalanche, Jets, Red Wings, and Canadiens, all with cap space and center depth needs, are potential trade partners. Even the Golden Knights could explore a deal.
However, Crosby's no-movement clause complicates things, but speculation will persist until he signs an extension or the March 6, 2025 deadline passes.
Though a Crosby trade seems unlikely, it could become a real option if the Penguins struggle early. Trading him could benefit both sides, offering the team a massive return to accelerate a rebuild, while Crosby could chase another Stanley Cup. His loyalty suggests he might return on a retirement deal, strengthening Pittsburgh's future.
The key question is whether Crosby would stay with a non-contender or pursue another title elsewhere.
