The news was announced today via the NHL Alumni Association's post on X:
Known for his time with the Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues, and Montreal Canadiens , Larry Trader leaves behind a career filled with dedication to the game of hockey.
Larry Trader was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the fifth round of the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. He played 55 games across the 1982-83 and 1984-85 seasons.
After his time with the Detroit Red Wings, Larry Trader was traded to the St. Louis Blues, where he played six games over two seasons. He then joined the Montreal Canadiens in the 1987-88 season, where he finished off his NHL journey.
In his post-NHL career, Larry Trader went on to play in the American Hockey League with the Binghamton Whalers before heading to Europe, where he made his mark in Austria and Italy. His final five seasons in professional hockey were spent abroad, leaving a lasting legacy in European leagues.
On the world stage, Larry Trader represented Canada at the 1983 World Junior Championship, securing a bronze medal with five points in seven games-matching the total of future Red Wings icon Steve Yzerman. Trader later helped Team Canada win the Spengler Cup in 1986-87.
Our hearts go out to Larry Trader's family, friends, and the entire hockey community.
