Carey Price, former Montreal Canadiens goaltender, recently shared his journey to sobriety on the UnHammered podcast with Brantt Myhres, a former NHL enforcer.

Reflecting on his struggles with alcohol addiction, Price revealed how the pressures of professional hockey and the demands of a high-stress environment contributed to his challenges.
"I've always been kind of a good time Charlie, you know hanging out with the boys," Price confessed, describing his initial relationship with alcohol.

However, as his career progressed and responsibilities grew, particularly with the arrival of his family, Price began to reassess his priorities.
"It wasn't until later, especially when you start bringing in a different aspect into your life, like kids, you have more responsibilities," Price acknowledged. "At a certain point I was like 'I need to make my family my priority and my own health my priority.'"

Price's introspection deepened as he questioned the impact of alcohol abuse on his professional performance and personal life.
"It starts wearing on you because you're like 'Am I being a professional? Am I truly giving it [my] all?'" Price pondered.

Ultimately, the realization led Price to seek treatment, a decision he made following the 2021 Stanley Cup Finals and subsequent surgery, acknowledging the added stressors that pushed him to take action.
"We had just gone to the Cup Finals, we had just lost in the Cup Finals, I had just gone through a surgery, there was a lot of things going on in my life that I think pushed me over the edge as that summer went on," Price reflected.

Throughout his journey, Price expressed gratitude for the support of his family and the understanding of former Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin, who played a pivotal role during this challenging period.
"Very understanding," Price remarked of Bergevin. "We had a long conversation, an emotional one, what was said will obviously stay between us, very heartfelt."

Acknowledging the complexities of sobriety, Price highlighted the personal growth and fulfillment he has found, particularly in his role as a father.
"Now I wake up on Sunday morning and I'm making breakfast for the kids and being a present dad," Price shared. "I'm really thankful for that time."

Looking ahead, Price remains optimistic about the future, planning a camping trip with former NHL player Jordin Tootoo as he continues to embrace life beyond hockey.
Carey Price's openness serves as a powerful testament to resilience and recovery, offering insights into the challenges faced by athletes and the importance of seeking support when navigating personal struggles.
