Despite putting up the best year of his career in 2023/24, the future of Elias Pettersson in Vancouver is up in the air, with the team potentially looking to shake things up as they chase a Stanley Cup.
Recently, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman came out with a surprise trade proposal involving Pettersson, after which it was revealed by Rick Dhaliwal that the teams had conversations surrounding EP40 early in the year.
Now, another trade proposal has come in from Sportsnet, with Mike Ruta now offering this potential deal between Vancouver and the Montreal Canadiens.
On the post about this with 418 votes thus far, opinion is split on who gets the better of this deal, with most believing that Vancouver would be the team to say no if this offer was on the table.
For Montreal, it's a deal that would land them a genuine star down the middle to continue their rebuild, and while letting go of Cole Caufield would certainly hurt their young core, it would be a step up in talent, especially moving on from two veterans in the process.
For Vancouver however, the deal makes less sense, as the team have little centre depth beyond J.T. Miller and Pettersson, so moving EP40 to get a talented young winger makes little sense, especially for a team pushing for a Stanley Cup this year.
Ultimately, it's a trade that wouldn't happen, as it makes little sense for Vancouver, who could get better deals for Pettersson out there, but with more speculation around him, don't be shocked if he does get moved at some point this season.
