Concession prices are one of the biggest disadvantages of going to any major sporting event. Fans hoping to make the most out of the evening have little options when it comes to basic food and drink expenses, such as a plate of nachos, a slice of pizza, or even just a drink. Utah HC, the newest team in the NHL, wants to alter that in an effort to help hockey establish a presence in a new area.
For the 2024-25 season, Smith Entertainment Group, the owners of Utah HC, has announced $2 and $3 prices on a few concessions. Some of these prices are comparable, if not less than, those found at your neighborhood late-night convenience store.
I doubt that any other NHL rink will offer even somewhat similar pricing. not to mention lower. This is undoubtedly a significant move made by Utah HC in an attempt to draw in more spectators and, ideally, outperform the team that came before it, the Arizona Coyotes.
By NHL standards, the Delta Center is not a large arena, seating little over 11,000 spectators. The owners of SEG, Ryan and Ashley Smith, have big plans for Salt Lake City's downtown, including a new, bigger home for the Utah Jazz and Utah HC.
The Arizona Coyotes' entire hockey operations portfolio was purchased by SEG, which also owns the NBA's Jazz, for roughly $1.2 billion in total, with the goal of moving them to Utah.
Regarding the prices of beer at other NHL teams, the Toronto Raptors and Maple Leafs play their home games at Scotiabank Arena, where prices range from $13.50 to $18, depending on the brand and size. Maybe Utah Hockey can teach other NHL teams a thing or two.
