The upcoming summer is expected to bring changes, for the Toronto Maple Leafs with talks of trading Mitch Marner.

One of their key players in the
"core four "
with the Anaheim Ducks being considered as a potential destination.
Sheldon Keefes departure has stirred discussions about the future of star forwards Auston Matthews, John Tavares, William Nylander and Mitch Marner within the Toronto Maple Leafs organization. Each of these players is slated to earn than $10 million against the salary cap for the 2024 25 season. While Matthews and Nylander recently inked contract extensions, Tavares and Marner have one year remaining on their deals all featuring no move clauses.
Speculation surrounds John Tavares and Mitch Marner as candidates for trades by the Leafs. Tavares age of 33 presents challenges in finding a trade partner due to concerns about his value. On the hand at 27 years old and in his prime Marner would likely command a higher return in any potential trade scenario.
In light of these developments Anaheim Ducks General Manager Pat Verbeek has shown optimism in his teams talent. Expressed ambitions for a strong playoff push, in the upcoming season. Verbeek expressed his desire to make a push for the Ducks to be competitive and in contention, for a playoff spot year.
The Ducks, who have faced challenges in the standings over the six seasons are looking towards improvement with a lineup of top ten draft picks and promising young players. Bringing in a player like Marner could greatly enhance their chances of reaching the playoffs.
Verbeek has set out his offseason objectives, which include acquiring a six right shot winger, a four right shot defenseman and a bottom six forward with speed and toughness. Marner appears to be a fit as a top six winger with skills.
Mitch Marner is recognized as one of the NHLs players showcasing his high hockey IQ, vision, anticipation and dynamic abilities. He has consistently maintained an average of over one point per game throughout his career tallying 194 goals and 445 assists in 576 games. While Marner has excelled during the season his performance in the playoffs has been somewhat underwhelming, with 50 points, in 57 games.
In Anaheim Marner could be a player, among a group of talents like Leo Carlsson, Mason McTavish and Trevor Zegras. The relaxed atmosphere in Anaheim compared to Toronto might also be a change for him.
When it comes to trading for Marner there are some obstacles to consider. His no move clause gives him the power to decide on trade destinations. Moreover any team interested in acquiring Marner would likely want assurances of a contract extension beyond his deal, which has one year left with a $10.903 million cap hit.
From a standpoint the Ducks have cap space. Over $33 million. To take on Marners contract. If the trade happens after July 1 the acquiring team would only need to pay $775,000 in base salary for the 2024 25 season, which makes the deal more financially viable.
In terms of what they might get in return for Marner if traded its expected that it would involve at one round pick and some promising prospects. Given that the Ducks have two first round picks, in the 2024 NHL Draft and a pool of prospects they could potentially meet the Leafs requirements.
The decisions made by the Maple Leafs during this offseason will be closely monitored by fans and analysts alike.
A trade involving Mitch Marner would have an effect, on both the Maple Leafs and the team acquiring him bringing about a change, in the NHL scene.
