Max Pacioretty, a seasoned left-winger and unrestricted free agent, is currently being pursued by the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings.

Both teams are evaluating their rosters as they explore potential offers for the 35-year-old forward.

Max Pacioretty's recent performance and injury history

Pacioretty, after battling injuries in the last few seasons, was limited to only 47 games with the Washington Capitals last season. He had signed a one-year, $2 million deal with Washington, adding 23 points, including four goals and 19 assists, during his time there. Teams are now considering whether his potential for offensive production outweighs the risks tied to his recent injury record.
David Pagnotta recently reported that both the Maple Leafs and Red Wings are positioning themselves to potentially sign Pacioretty. Toronto, with just over $1.275 million in cap space, may free up an additional $1.1 million by sending defenseman Conor Timmins to the AHL, which would allow them more flexibility to offer Pacioretty a contract.
In contrast, the Red Wings have significantly more cap space, boasting $17.6 million. However, they still need to finalize contracts for key players like Lucas Raymond, Jonatan Berggren, and Mo Seider. Once these deals are completed, their available funds will shrink considerably, potentially affecting their offer to Pacioretty.
It's unclear what terms Pacioretty is seeking for his next contract, though it is likely he will aim for a one-year deal, similar to the one he had with the Capitals. This contract could include performance bonuses based on the number of games played, making it a low-risk, high-reward opportunity for whichever team signs him.
Toronto may need to be creative with their cap space, while Detroit could make a stronger financial offer but might hesitate if they deplete their funds signing key players.
Pacioretty's decision could impact the competitive balance for both teams. As they gear up for the 2024-25 season, his potential signing will be closely monitored by both fanbases, with each team eager to boost their lineup with a veteran scorer.
