Theres been some buzz in the NHL, about trade discussions involving Toronto Maple Leafs standout player Mitch Marner possibly joining the Winnipeg Jets in a big deal.
Marner is currently in the last year of his $10.9 million contract, and holds a no trade clause. It's not unexpected that GM Brad Treliving may be considering exploring his options to secure something if Marner ends up being traded.
According to the rumoured trade proposal, Marner would be moving to Winnipeg in exchange for Dylan Demelo, Chaz Lucius and Nikolaj Ehlers.
Regarding Ehlers he has faced challenges and successes during playoff seasons. His recent postseason performance was lackluster with zero goals and two points in five games. Although he has been effective at generating chances during 5v5 play, his playoff statistics are modest with four goals and 14 points in 37 games. There are concerns about his ice time and power play opportunities.
Ehlers signed a seven year deal for $42 million back in 2017, carrying an annual cap hit of $6 million. Additionally, there is Dylan DeMelo to consider as he's currently a restricted agent. If the Leafs go through with this trade they would acquire the rights, to DeMelo, which could potentially secure his future with the team. Additionally there's Lucius, who despite some injuries remains an offensive player.
This proposal is quite captivating. It'll be interesting to see how everything unfolds in the end.
