The Toronto Maple Leafs are seeking an upgrade down the middle, and according to Darren Dreger, they've identified the tiers of player they are seeking.

After some doubts over their off-season moves, the Toronto Maple Leafs have been rolling as of late, and now, they look to upgrade their lineup ahead of the March 7th trade deadline as they continue their chase for a Stanley Cup.

According to many reports, Toronto's top target is an upgrade down the middle, likely at the 3C role, and if they can find an upgrade there, it will give them arguably the best centre group in the NHL behind Auston Matthews and John Tavares.

While there's some big time names out there, TSN's Darren Dreger is now reporting that the team are out on the big names, and are instead looking to focus on a second tier of centre to upgrade their roster.

«So, I think the group that the Toronto Maple Leafs have identified as a little bit more diverse, I think you're looking at Ryan Strome, maybe Ryan O'Reilly, how about a return there from Nashville? Scott Laughton is out there again, but the Flyers want a first-round draft pick in return, so maybe that's a stretch. Mikael Granlund's name is out there. Yanni Gourde. Nick Bjugstad

This would effectively take the team out of the running for players like Elias Pettersson, J.T. Miller and Dylan Cozens among others, but given their star power up front, this definitely makes sense.

In his report, Dreger also name dropped New York's Brock Nelson, who has been linked to Toronto over the past few months, giving them plenty of options moving forward.

If Toronto can get a deal done for any of these names, it gives their forward group even more depth, and if they can remain at 100% health, there's no reason that this team can't finally contend for a Stanley Cup following years of disappointment.
