Jake McCabe, a defenseman, has been re-signed by the Toronto Maple Leafs to a five-year, $22.55 million contract extension.

McCabe disclosed that negotiations for an extension were in progress during training camp. In 2021, he signed a four-year, $16 million contract with the Chicago Blackhawks, which he is currently playing out.
"We've talked a couple times. I love it here and I think they enjoy my game too," McCabe said last month. "That's why you have agents and now it's training camp time, so I'm just looking forward to being with the fellas and ramping up our game."

Prior to the 2023 NHL trade deadline, the Toronto Maple Leafs first acquired Jake McCabe and Sam Lafferty from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for a first and second round pick.
According to Frank Seravalli, the Jake McCabe contract has deferred salary, which reduces the average annual cap hit from $4.7 million to $4.51 million. Since the Carolina Hurricanes and general manager Eric Tulsky took advantage of the technique to extend their contract with Seth Jarvis, this is the second time we have seen deferred payment utilized in a contract. With larger contracts, this approach is anticipated to be used more frequently in the league.
He is currently in his second full season with Toronto after being dealt to the team prior to the 2022 trade deadline. McCabe just finished the previous season with career-high totals of eight goals and 28 points in 73 games. While playing in all seven of the Boston Bruins' playoff games, he added one goal.
McCabe, a 586-game veteran, has scored 155 points and scored 33 goals during his time with the Maple Leafs, Blackhawks, and Buffalo Sabres.
McCabe was one of three important Maple Leafs players in contract years this season before he signed on Monday. In addition to expressing a wish to re-sign this week, forwards John Tavares and Mitch Marner are still scheduled for unrestricted free agency next summer.
