In a recent analysis for Leafs Nation, Michael Mazzei evaluated the NHL free agent market for cost-effective additions and identified former Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators winger Dominik Kubalik as a strong candidate.
As noted by Mazzei, the Leafs are in search of a replacement for Tyler Bertuzzi, and Kubalik could be an economical option. Kubalik enjoyed a standout season in 2019-20 with the Blackhawks, scoring 30 goals and notching 46 points. However, his performance has been inconsistent since then. Following his time with Chicago, Kubalik's point totals fell into the 30s, and despite a brief resurgence with the Detroit Red Wings, his most recent stint with the Ottawa Senators saw his production dip to just 19 points in 74 games.
Mazzei also highlights that adding Kubalik could serve as a strategic move if the Leafs decide to trade Nick Robertson. Recent speculation suggests that Robertson may be seeking a trade, adding urgency to the situation.
With the NHL season rapidly approaching and quality players in short supply, acquiring a player with Kubalik's potential could provide valuable insurance against the loss of Robertson. The opportunity to secure a former 30-goal scorer should not be overlooked by the Leafs.
