Just weeks after signing the 300-game NHL defenseman, the Toronto Maple Leafs may have officially lost their rights to Jani Hakanpaa.
It seems that Brad Treliving of the Toronto Maple Leafs has developed a knack for acquiring injured defensemen from the Dallas Stars, beginning with John Klingberg last year, who was sidelined with a hip injury and placed on long-term injured reserve.
"The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed defenseman John Klingberg on long-term injured reserve as he deals with an ailing hip injury.
Klingberg had double hip replacement surgery in 2018 and it appears to be a lingering issue #LeafsForever"
The Toronto Maple Leafs have added two more defensemen from the Dallas Stars this year, starting with Chris Tanev and soon after, injured Jani Hakanpaa, who signed a two-year contract valued at $3 million.
"The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed 6'7» defenseman Jani Hakanpaa to a 2-year, $1.5M AAV contract."
"The #LeafsForever reported contract for Hakanpaa ($1.5M * 2) has still not been registered.
As a result, we've removed him from our projected Leafs roster for now. You'll still see the contract on his page, but he's not assigned to our Leafs roster."
While this doesn't rule out the possibility of Jani Hakanpaa eventually passing clearance, it's certainly a troubling sign for Toronto. If he doesn't clear soon, the Maple Leafs will need to act swiftly to find a replacement for his role. Otherwise, this could lead to another disappointing season for the team.
