The Toronto Maple Leafs have drawn significant attention this offseason, especially regarding their decision not to acquire a third center.

General Manager Brad Treliving, known for his strategic moves, focused on reinforcing the defense. Despite having ample cap space, it's evident that the Leafs' roster still shows a gap in their bottom-six, particularly in the third center position.
As the 2024 training camp approaches, new reports suggest that Treliving and head coach Craig Berube might have a well-thought-out plan to address this.

Possible internal solutions for the third center role

Recent insights from Maple Leafs Daily reveal several potential strategies. The team could promote a player from the AHL, Max Domi might transition to a full-time center role, or Treliving might explore trade options.
Currently, Pontus Holmberg and Max Domi are seen as viable candidates for the third center role. Holmberg, naturally a center, has been shifted to the wings due to a less-than-ideal 44% faceoff success rate. In contrast, Domi achieved a 50% faceoff success rate, winning 226 out of 452 draws.
Other notable names in the mix include Fraser Minten, Alex Steeves, and Easton Cowen. Steeves, 24, had an impressive season with the Marlies, scoring 57 points in 65 games. Despite his potential, he has yet to score in his four NHL games. Minten and Cowen are rising prospects. Cowen, 19, had a standout year with 96 points in 54 games for the London Knights, contributing significantly in the playoffs. Minten, who played with the Saskatoon Blades and had brief NHL stints, also showed promise with 38 points in 36 WHL games.

The development dilemma for young prospects

Although fans are eager to see Minten and Cowen in the NHL, another season in their respective leagues could be beneficial for their development. The 2024 preseason will be critical in determining if these young players can challenge Domi or Holmberg for the third center spot.
Treliving faces a balancing act: he must make decisions that benefit both the team's immediate championship aspirations and the long-term development of emerging talent. With the Leafs aiming for a Stanley Cup, the pressure is on to ensure that any roster changes align with the team's high-stakes goals.
